ARTIST STATEMENT

I have a tendency to do too much and to become overstimulated and this habit informs how I think about and make my artwork. I make functional objects that help to regulate and optimize the flow of energy in one’s body. I utilize repetitive actions to simulate a meditative experience, which I think of as charging stations, like what one might use to recharge the battery of a cell phone. My work activates the senses by reigning in wandering thoughts to center us in our bodies. This happens through the feel of a textured form, the sound of electrical noises, or the sights of flashing lights and kaleidoscope-like patterns. I also want my work to embody the idea of play. Knowing how to play is a valuable skill that helps us engage with the world around us, be social, and to decompress. I visually represent the idea of play by using elements and materials often associated with childhood, like beads, bright colors, and pop imagery. Work that focuses on fun, healing, and sensory experiences is especially important at this moment in American history when most people are overworked and stressed.
